My blood runs cold every time I hear that another teen has gone missing. I’m sure many Jamaicans feel the same way too. It’s time for the abductions taking place in Jamaica to come to an abrupt end. It is possible. There are enough people, power and resources to make this a realty. The Ananda Alert Programme and other programmes are doing the best they can to resolve the issue and I commend the efforts of their members. However, I’m still not satisfied as teens are still going missing every other day on average. I know I’m not standing alone as countless Jamaican citizens will say and are saying the same thing.
If the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and government officials cannot get the job done immediately, they should seek international assistance. Between the months of May and June of this year, about 354 teens were abducted. I’m certain that if a similar scenario should happen in the United States or the United Kingdom then, in a matter of days, justice would be administered. A prime example is the way in which President Obama has dealt with the assassination of Osama bin Laden. Every country is driven by leaders and, whenever a country is short of leaders, that country goes awry. Today’s leaders are getting older and will soon retire in the upcoming years. This calls for a much younger generation to fill their soon-to-be empty slots. A country’s future is in the hands of its younger citizens and without them a country literally has no future.
Today Jamaica’s younger citizens are swiftly being abducted by a group of abductors. In September of 2008, Ananda Dean, a primary school girl, went missing, and about two weeks later her headless, decomposing remains were found at Chancery Hall in Red Hills, St. Andrew. Being disturbed by the incident, Prime Minister Bruce Golding declared that, “We are today not laying any flowers on her grave. What we are seeking to do today is something that we hope is much more lasting, much more valuable and that is to ensure that what happened to Ananda does not happen to any child in the future." This statement was aired in year 2008, but it’s now year 2011 and we have not yet seen its effectiveness.
The JCF need to create a much more effective approach in bringing to an end the abduction of teens. It’s a disturbing thing to hear that abduction is on the rise. Abductors are destroying the country’s future and politicians need to move with more urgency to resolve this problem. There seems to be an organized group that is creating this problem and they must be stopped. Whenever this group is found, every single member should be publicly hung. Let there be a speedy execution of such a group. Wipe it from the earth as it is a disgrace to our nation. If this is too harsh then sentence them for life in prison. I’m calling on all government officials to take a stand immediately. The security of the Jamaican people, the growth of the country and the future of the nation is in your hands. Use every means possible to get to the root of the problem. Diligently seek out those who are committing such unwelcome actions and where their base is located. Ultimately, destroy their base and bring them to justice. The wise man Solomon stated that, “Justice will give a country stability.” Stability this is what Jamaica needs and the rate of abduction is a hindrance to making that a realty.
I’m sure the JCF comprises men and women that are as intelligent as the U.S Navy Seals. They have the capability to locate Al-Qaida (“the base,” in Arabic) of these abductors and cease their operations. According the U.S, now that the main leaders of the terrorist group, including Osama bin Laden, are deceased, Al-Qaida’s operation is coming to a screeching halt. Not many days hence let the same be said for the group of abductors that are terrorizing Jamaican teens. Mr. Owen Ellington, we the Jamaican people want to see results. Increase the effort of the JCF in bringing to an immediate closure these abduction operations that are so prevalent in Jamaica.
