More Than 300 000 Jamaicans to Benefit from Better Preparedness to Climate Risks

The World Bank Board of Directors today approved a US$30 million loan to help enhance Jamaica’s resilience to disaster and climate risk through the promotion of climate and disaster risk management.

Jamaica is one of the most at risk countries in the world, with high percentages of GDP and population at risk to two or more natural hazards. Damages and losses from hydro-meteorological disasters and earthquakes were estimated at over US$3 billion between 1988 and 2013. In addition according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the impact of sea level rise and intensified storm surges in Latin America and the Caribbean will be highest in Jamaica.


TEF Donates Computer Equipment to New Kingston Police Post

Recognizing the need to assist the police in taking statements more effectively and in a timely manner, the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) donated more than $200,000 worth of computer equipment late December, last year.

A flat screen computer monitor, keyboard, mouse and a printer with photocopier, fax and scanner capabilities were among the items donated to the New Kingston Police Post.


New Income Tax Threshold Effective January 1, 2016

A new income tax threshold of $592,800 per annum comes into effect in the New Year on January 1, 2016, moving up from the current tax-free amount of $557,232.  

The increase in the threshold means that the corresponding tax-free portion to be used by Jamaican employers, as of January 2016, in making periodic payments is as follows:
