Tyson Gay, the third fastest 100m runner ever, has pulled out of the Van Damme Memorial in Brussels, Belgium on Friday. The race was to be the clash of all clashes. It was supposed to be the race that we didn't get to see at the Olympics.
However, Gay but pulled out Thursday, saying he didn't want to risk further damage to a hamstring he injured at the U.S. Olympic trials in July.
A few days ago, the double World Champion stated that he didn't know how his leg would hold up because of the hamstring injury.
"I don't think I am as sharp right now, considering my leg, to be very, very, competitive with those guys," he said, indicating at the time he could still decide to skip the race.
It might have been the best decision as it would have needed an extraodinary effort from Gay to keep up with the Jamaicans.
Last week, Bolt won the 100 in 9.83 seconds in Zurich and on Tuesday in Lausanne, Switzerland, he eased up well before the finish in his 200 and won that race in 19.63. He is seeking to end his season with a victory.
"I'm definitely going out there to compete at my best," Bolt said of his last race of the season.
"I already got the biggest thing there is," said the Olympic champion. "But it would be good to go out a winner."
Powell has also been in impressive form. He ran 9.87 in terrible weather for victory in Gateshead and then produced the second fastest time ever when he ran 9.72 in the 100 in Lausanne. That time equaled the former world record Bolt set in New York City last May.
"I'm very happy, after all that I've been through this year," Powell said.
"The race in Lausanne was my best of this season, but not perfect," Powell added. "I discussed with my coach how to improve some details. I asked him why I am running so fast at the end of the season and he said there's a lot less pressure, so you can do whatever you want. Weather permitting, I will run very fast on a track I really love - I've already won four times in Brussels." Tomorrow we will see if he can make it five in a row.
