According to a report in Sports Illustrated today, two members of Jamaica's Olympic track team to the Beijing Olympics received shipments of performance-enhancing drugs from an internet distributor.
The two athletes in question are Delloreen Ennis-London, the 2005 World Championships silver medallist in the 100m hurdles and Adrian Findley, a member of Jamaica's second placed team in the 4x400 meter relays at the 2008 World Indoor Championships. Ennis-London, 33, finished fifth in Beijing in her event while Findley was an alternate for the men's 400m hurdles event.
The documents uncovered by the American magazine state that between June 2006 and February 2007, two shipments of Somatropin (Human Growth Hormone, HGH) and one shipment of Triest (Estogen) - both banned substances - were sent to Delloreen London, at a Texas address.
It is reported that the substances ordered in the name of Delloreen London, were purchased through the Anti-Aging Group.
The documents also state that in November 2006, a shipment of Testosterone, Testosterone Aqueous, and Oxandrolone (an oral steroid) were sent to Adrian Findlay's address. The substances were reportedly obtained through the South Beach Rejuvenation clinic which has ties to the scandals surrounding Major League baseball.
When Findley was reportedly contacted on Tuesday in North Carolina, he denied the allegations. "I've been running stable all my life," he said. "Trust me I don't use steroids. I guarantee you it wasn't mine and I didn't order it. I have a theory how this was sent."
Neither Ennis-London nor Findley have ever failed a drug test and the report only pertains to the receipt and not actual use of the substances.
However, this revelation will no doubt add to the suspicion of Jamaica's track success being linked to performance enhancing drugs. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/more/09/02/jamaican.track/?cnn=yes
