Is Asafa Powell resigned to being one of the greatest srpinters never to have won an individual gold medal at a major track and field championships?   Well, that can certainly be inferred from the comments he made upon his arrival in Lausanne for the IAAF Athletissima Super Grand Prix meet on Tuesday (Sep. 2).

Coming off an impressive 9.87 victory in torrential conditions at Gateshead, Powell was asked about his seeming inability to win the big one.  This is what the former world record holder had to say:

"Who knows?  Maybe I'm just not a guy for those championships. Maybe I'm only the kind of guy to compete in Grand Prix and Golden League races."

"When I'm on the circuit, I'm always winning." he added. "I don't know how to explain that."

Many wondered if his failure to win a medal at the Olympics would have sent him into a downward spiral.  However, he seems to have taken his Olympic results in stride.

 "It's not the first time,"  he said, while smiling, "so it's not so hard to get used to it and look ahead."

Powell seems really intent on finishing his year in style and giving the fans in Switzerland something to talk about.

"The track is really fast, so I just want to go out there and give my best performance,  he said."  "I've been working on a lot of stuff, especially my technique. I'm in good shape. I've had a lot of injuries this year, but I still feel pretty strong."

After his win in Monaco in early August, he said his legs felt like he has a world record in them.  Fans shouldn't be too surprised if he does get the world record. 

After his third place finish at last year's Osaka world championships, he went on to brake the world record at Rieti.  Rieti is again on his agenda.

“I am planning to run in Brussels, Rieti and the World Athletics Final in Stuttgart. I will return to Jamaica only at the end of September.”

Will he return as the world's fastest man again?  We'll just have to wait and see.
