Usain Bolt, with three Olympic gold medals and three World records from Beijing, will undoubtedly be the headline athlete at the ÅF Golden League meeting, Weltklasse Zürich, on Friday (29).
The new poster boy for sprinting will be competing in the 100m against six of his challengers from Beijing including compatriot Michael Frater. Only Asafa Powell will be absent, as he will be competing at the meet in Gateshead, England on Sunday.
Taking Powell's place will be Olympic 200m bronze medallist, Shawn Crawford of the USA.
The is potentially a huge payday for Bolt as he is guaranteed US$16,000.00 for winning the race and US$50,000 and a gold bar worth US$27,000 if he sets a new world record.
Bolt, who has not been back to Jamaica since his heroics at the Olympic games, says he is ready to run though he's not running for a world record.
"I don’t know what time I will run," Bolt said ahead of the Weltklasse meet. "I am just trying to come here and let the fans enjoy my performance. Because they come here to see a performance."
He's had time to party and celebrate his success but now it's back to work.
"Track and field is my job. This is what I do, I work," Bolt added. "Right now I’m just trying to get my blood pumping pretty much. I’ve been doing a little bit of training."
Also competing at the meet will be Richard Phillips in the men's 110m hurdles. He will have his work cut out for him as he is up against a tough field. Among his competitors will be newly minted world recorder holder and Olympic medallist, Dayron Robles of Cuba. Anwar Moore, David Oliver and Aries Merritt, all of the US, will also be in the race.
For the 400m hurdle race, three of Jamaica's entrants in the event in Beijing are scheduled to run. Fourth place finisher, Danny McFarlane, Isa Phillips and Markino Buckley are entered to run against the American triumvate of Angelo Taylor, Bershawn Jackson and Kerron Clement.
On the women's side, Shericka Williams, Novlene Williams-Mills and Rosemary White are down to compete against Sanya Richards who is seeking to reassert her position as the top athlete over 400m. Richards was relegated to third at the Olympics after being passed by Sherika Williams and Christine Ohuruogu.
Kenia Sinclair will be running in the 800m against Pamela Jelimo and Janeth Jepkosgei of Kenya as well as MAria Mutola of Mozabique. Jelimo is one of only two athletes still in the running for the Golden League Jackpot of US$1,000,000.00.
The night ends with the “Zürich Trophy” which pits the Olympic sprint relay champions and World record holders Jamaica against the pre-Olympic favourites USA in the 4x100m. At the Olympics, the US team dropped the baton in the heats and the highly anticipated match-up in the final didn't materialize. Though the line up will be different, it should prove to be an exciting end to the evening.
