In light of his success at the Beijing Olympics, Usain Bolt’s sponsors are already rewarding him for his outstanding performances.
He has already netted a £500,000 bonus from Puma and, according to the company’s CEO, Jochen Zeitz, is to receive a brand new BMW M3. This was announced at a news conference in Beijing, China yesterday.
Bolt won gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay - all with world records. He also celebrated his birthday a day after his 200m victory.
Zeitz said that Puma wanted to help Bolt celebrate his birthday and Olympic performances.
"Usain, I'm not sure we can top the medals you won this week, but we didn't want you to miss out on a birthday celebration," said Zeitz. "So, we would like to present you with a special gift that we heard you've had your eye on in Jamaica. It's a fully-loaded BMW M3, and we'll be sending you the real thing when you get home."
Puma, which also sponsors the Jamaica team, praised the overall performance of Jamaica’s athletes, including women's 100-meter winner Shelly-Ann Fraser and women's 200-meter gold medallist Veronica Campbell-Brown. Zeitz said: “Six years ago, we felt Jamaica as a country and the athletes would represent Puma well and it paid off in a big way.”
"But we do not just focus on winning. We really focus on how we perform and how we do it. That is why we have a partnership with Jamaica. Jamaica does it in style. It's a wonderful lifestyle we would all want, but don't have time to go to Jamaica.”
Meanwhile, Bolt, who is not likely to return to Jamaica anytime soon, has Golden League meetings in Zurich and Lausanne in the next fortnight. He is likely to receive six-figure fees his appearances.
