Jamaica’s three entrants in the men’s 100 meters all advanced to the semi-finals today along with five other men from the Caribbean.
World-record holder, Usain Bolt, looked the most impressive with his time of 9.92 seconds. The 6’ 5” phenomenon ran the fastest ever 100m on Chinese soil even after he slowed to a jog midway the race. He had time to be glancing from side to side, almost mockingly, as he tried to ascertain whether his position was secure.
“I just ran the first 50 meters, then I looked around to make sure I was safe and shut it down,” Bolt, 21, told reporters at Beijing's Bird's Nest stadium.
“I just came to run and see what I can do,”' added Bolt. “I'm ready for my best.”
Powell, who owned the world record before Bolt took it in May, took to the track after his compatriot and won his quarterfinal in 10.02 seconds. He also looked impressive as he shut down at 50 meters and trotted in to the finish.
Michael Frater, World Championship silver medallist from three years ago, finished second in his quarterfinal with a time of 10.09 seconds. Beating him to the tape was Churandy Martina from the Netherland Antilles who ran a personal best of 9.99 seconds.
In the meantime, the Jamaican women bow into action tonight at 9:50 pm local time. First on the track will be Shelly-Ann Fraser, the breakthrough athlete of the year. She will be competing in heat 6. Sherone Simpson will run in heat 9 and Kerron Stewart in heat 10.
Also on track will be Novelene Williams-Mills, Sherika Williams and Rose-Marie White in the women’s 400m.
