Thursday Nights at the Fights, the boxing spectacle in Denham town, has developed such a buzz that, beginning this and every Saturday and Sunday beginning at 8:30 am, CTV cable television station will be adding the event to its programming.

The half-hour boxing programme will be shown every weekend until the end of the series. HYPE TV has also shown interest and has partnered with CTV to film and produce the event.  They will also be broadcasting at later dates.

The six month old event sees fighters squaring off in a makeshift ring in the road for several hours every thursday night in the western Kingston community.  The BBC has even preempted local broadcasters and did a report on the event a few months ago.

"Everybody is talking about Thursday night at the fights! They're just dying for Thursday to come along," says one regular.

With the rising popularity of the UFC, one can't help but think that this inner city phenomenon was influenced by it.  Whereas in the UFC there are strict rules, there are no such guidelines at Thursday Nights at the Fights.

"There are no rules," 18-year-old Donnique Francis declared as he stared into the distance. "You just haffi fight the champion till him knock-out," he continued. Well Leo, the reigning street boxing champion since January, is still undefeated and you can see him and all who have dared to go up against him over the past six months, in action on Channel 394 for areas with Flow cable feed and whereever CTV is found on the other local cable networks.

No one has ever been injured in any of the match-ups which are friendly and which sometimes see even sisters facing off in the ring.

"One evening in January, after playing football, one a mi brethren did have a gloves and mi teck it and just start fight in di road and crowd start gather. From dat every week we start do di same ting and it just get bigger and bigger," Donnique, who will remain a student at Denhman Town High school until this Thursday when he graduates, explained how he started what has now mushroomed into a weekly headline entertainment event.

"Is jus' a way fi entertain weself and liven up the community," he explained with a shrug.

Now residents speak of Denham Town as one of the safest parts of downtown Kingston.

"It brings the peace and all of that," says Owen, one of the promoters.

"People from all about, Rema, Jungle, come and take in a little boxing. Police, soldier, everybody likes the event we a deal with."

Organisers say the event helps bring the community together as well as people who live outside it.  They hope that it'll encourage more young people to get involved in sport and away from trouble on the streets.
