Jamaica's world championships decathlon silver medallist, Maurice Smith, amassed 8,434 points to win the decathlon title at the 2nd TNT-Fortuna Combined Events meeting in Kladno. Smith scored 4410 points after the first day of the event and went on to finish with 8434. He clocked decent 10.81 at 100 m, jumped 7.31m in Long Jump and improved his best in the shot put to being the third best shot put ever done by a decathlete. He first threw 17.60m and then 17.78m. After that he produced a good 1.98 in High Jump and 48.76 sec for 400m. After entering the second day in front, Smith reeled off a solid 110-metre hurdles race in 13.91 seconds against the wind and an excellent discus win at 52.81 metres. His javelin effort was a moderate 50.83 metres and his pole vault was 4.75 metres as he put together the third-best decathlon total for the year so far, bettered only by Kazakhstan's Dmitry Karpov (8,504) and Russian Alexey Sysoev (8,497). Czech hero Roman Sebrle gathered 8076 points to finish second. Smith admitted in a post race interview that more work is needed if he is to get gold in Beijing. "I must be satisfied, but it is clear I need lot of work for my javelin throw," the 28-year-old Smith said after his win.
