The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) has received equipment valued at $32 million from the Ministry of National Defence, People's Republic of China. Among the items are bullet-proof helmets, jungle hats, combat boots and camouflage uniforms. The JDF has also received musical instruments from China.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony at Up Park Camp, Acting Officer Commanding, JDF Supply Depot, Captain Oneil Bogle said that the ceremony marked another milestone in the growth and relationship between the Government of Jamaica and the People's Republic of China.

"It is no secret that the globalized environment in which we co-exist, requires that ties between nations and nation states be enhanced in all realms of the imagination. This is even more critical as countries strive to ensure their survival in the face of shrinking resources, both economic and otherwise," he said.

He further noted that the gesture was as a result of the will of leaders, which stem from the realization that "developing countries with limited resources like Jamaica cannot do it alone and will require assistance, not only in words but also in deed."

Captain Bogle pointed out that the ceremony typifies the type of co-operation that has grown between the two countries and undoubtedly has netted and will continue to net positive and mutually beneficial results.

"The JDF is today tasked to support the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) in combating crime on a scale that is unprecedented in this millennium and our level is hinged on our capability and capacity to assist," he said.

In his remarks, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Jamaica, His Excellency Chen Jinghua, noted that the provision of the equipment was only one area of co-operation. "Apart from this, we have seen increased exchanges of military personnel by way of high level visits and various training programmes," he said.

Ambassador Jinghua pointed out that his Government was willing to continue to work closely with Jamaica to advance their friendly and co-operative relations to a higher level.
