Jamaica's Usain 'Lightning' Bolt's ran his first 200m of the season in a world leading 19.83 seconds. It was somewhat anti-climactic as many had expected a performance on par with his 100m world record he set almost two weeks earlier. Brian Dzingai of Zimbabwe, running a time of 20.17, finished second ahead of American John Capel, United States, 20.71, in third.
Though winning in a fast time and by a wide margin Bolt's thunder was taken by his Cuban neighbour, Dayron Robles, who a technically perfect race to take 0.01sec off the 110m hurdles world record mark set by China's Olympic and world champion Liu Xiang.
Robles had to wait an agonising two minutes as his time was initially recorded as 12.88sec, tying Liu's world mark. It was thereafter adjusted to 12.87 and Robles went crazy.
"As soon as I saw 12.87 I just went crazy," Robles said. "It was the perfect race, but I think I can run even faster. Whether I can beat Liu Xiang in Beijing now. We will have to see."
Robles's mark was not the only world record of the night, with Dire Tune, the Ethiopian winner of the Boston Marathon, setting a women's one-hour mark of 18.517km, beating the previous record of 18.340km set in 1998 by Tegla Loroupe, of Kenya.
Jamaica's 400 hurdler, Walker Melaine, continued her good form with a 54.42 second clocking to win her event ahead Poland's Anna Jesien, 54.71. Zuzana Hejnova of the Czech Republic was third in 54.96.
Ricardo Chambers could only manage third in the men's 400m. He stopped the clock at 45.83 seconds, trailing Briton, Martyn Rooney, 45.32 and Irishman, David Gillick, 45.65.
Missing from the 400m was Jeremy Wariner of the United States who opted instead for the rarely run 300m. As expected, he won the event with a time of 31.72. Paul Hession of Ireland, 32.47 and Nathaniel McKiney of the Bahamas, 33.01, were second and third respectively.
The Dibaba sisters continued to dominate distance running as 5000m world record holder, Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia, won the 10,000m in 31:03.37 ahead of her sister, Ejegayehu Dibaba, who finished second in 31:04.05. Another Ethiopian, Meselech Melkame, was third in 31:04.93.
