Jamaica's Commonwealth 100m champion, Sheri-Ann Brooks, as well as Derrick Atkins and Brendan Christian were Caribbean winners at the Bislett Games Golden League track and field meet yesterday.

However, the highlight of the meet was a world record run in the women's 5000m by Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba.  The double world 10,000-metre champion, clocked a fabulous 14 minutes 11.15 seconds which took 5 seconds off the previous mark held by her compatriot, Meseret Defar.  Kenya's Lucy Kabuu Wangui (14:33.49) was second.

Atkins, the World 100m silver medallist, won the men's 100 metres in a wind-aided 9.98 seconds ahead of American Michael Rodgers (10.04).  Marc Burns of Trinidad and Tobago placed third in 10.07 seconds and Jamaican Clement Campbell finished fifth in 10.19 seconds.

Brooks, of Jamaica, won the womens' equivalent in 11.24 seconds.  She barely managed to hold off America's Bianca Knight (11.25) and Belarus' Yulia Nestsiarenka (11.26)

Antiguan Christian landed the men's 200 metres in 20.39 seconds.  The reigning Pan American Games 200-metre champion, outgunned Ireland's Paul Hession (20.48) and Campbell (20.58) in the half-lap sprint.

Knight stepped up a place to capture the 200 in 22.56, defeating the Russian Yulia Gushchina (22.85) and Britain's Christine Ohuruogu (22.94).

The Cayman Islands' Cydonie Mothersill placed fourth in 23.06 seconds, with Bahamian Debbie Ferguson (23.07) and Brooks (23.17) getting fifth and sixth, respectively.

In the men's 400 metres, in which the World No 1 Jeremy Wariner, of the USA, returned to winning form.  Bahamian Chris Brown posted a career-best run and national record for second spot.

Brown, the Pan Am Games champion, lowered his personal best time from 44.45 to 44.40 as he chased Wariner in a brave effort.

Beaten by fellow American LaShawn Merritt in Berlin last Sunday, Wariner was impressive as he stopped the clock at 43.98 seconds, the first sub-44 clocking for the year.

Costa Rica's Nery Brenes was third in 45.21 seconds, while the Caribbean trio of Jamaican Ricardo Chambers (45.49), Trinidad and Tobago's Ato Stephens (45.62), and Sanjay Ayre (45.68), took fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

The Caribbean enjoyed another top three finish through Jamaican Danny McFarlane in the men's 400-metre hurdles.  The Olympic silver medallist led entering the straightaway and clocked a personal season's best 48.58 seconds for the runner-up spot behind American Bershawn Jackson, whose time of 48.15 was also his quickest this year.

The new Kenyan star, Pamela Jelimo, gave another excellent performance in winning the women's 800 metres in 1:55.41 seconds. Slovakia's Lucia Klocova (1:58.89) was second and Jamaican Kenia Sinclair ran her quickest time this year for third in 1:59.00.  Kenya's world champion Janeth Jepkosgei faded to fifth in 1:59.27 after trying to chase Jelimo in the first half of the race.

Spain's Josephine Onyia won the women's 100-metre hurdles in 12.59 seconds ahead of American LoLo Jones (12.66) and Sweden's Susanna Kallur (12.71).  Jamaicans Delloreen Ennis-London (12.76) and Vonette Dixon (12.81) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
