Asafa Powell, contrary to previous reports, will be competing at Trinidad & Tobago's National Open Track & Field Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium between June 20-22 as preparation for Jamaica's Olympic Trials later in the month.

Games committee chairman Allan Baboolal was yesterday quoted in the Trinidad and Tobago Express as saying that Powell will compete in the Trials. 

"He (Asafa) is expected to compete at the Championships, and we are very happy for that," Baboolal said.

Subsequent to this development, Powell's agent, Paul Doyle, said that the reigning Jamaican national champion would not compete until the Jamaican National Championships from June 27-29 due to a chest injury he received at the beginning of the season.

President of the MVP Track Club, Bruce James, confirmed the change in plans for Powell.

"We wanted him to have at least one race before the (Jamaica) National Championships," James explained.

Powell has not competed in the 100 metres since clocking 10.04 in his season opener in Melbourne, Australia, on February 21.

The Express also reported that Powell and his training partner, Trinidad & Tobago's Darrel Brown, will take part in a development seminar conducted by their coach, Stephen Francis, on June 19 at the Stadium's VIP Lounge. This clinic will be the first in a series of workshops and sprint seminars in T&T.

Baboolal announced as well that Jamaican sprint hurdler Brigette Foster-Hylton will be on show at the three-day meet in the twin-island republic.

The men's 100 metres dash will be a high-quality event, featuring Richard Thompson, who has a 9.93 season's best, Marc Burns, Aaron Armstrong and Brown.
