Commissioner retracts his resignation PDF Print E-mail

Commissioner of Police Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin has withdrawn his letter of resignation.  This was confirmed by Prime Minister Bruce Golding on Tuesday afternoon as he said that  Lewin would continue in the post.

Speaking in the House of Representatives today, Prime Minister Golding said the Commissioner's turn around came after discussions involving Lewin, members of the Police Service Commission and himself.

It has been widely reported that Commissioner Lewin did not have the full support of the government and members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.  It was assumed that this was a major factor in his resignation.

However, Prime Minister Golding, speaking on the matter, assured the Commissioner that those assumptions were unfounded.

"The Commissioner has been reassured that he has the full backing of the government and the Police Services Commission. He needs to be assured as well that he has the full support of the members of the police force and the support of well thinking people of Jamaica," he said.

Commissioner Lewin was appointed in December with much expression of public support.
