Chris Blackwell launches his own rum label PDF Print E-mail

ImageOne of Jamaica's leading entrepreneurs, Chris Blackwell, has started what is likely to be another very profitable venture.  Famous for bringing reggae and Bob Marley to the world through his Island Records imprint as well as his hotels, namely Goldeneye in Oracabessa, The Caves in Negril and Strawberry in rural St. Andrew, Blackwell has now segued into the rum business by launching his own label called Black Gold, Blackwell's Fine Jamaican Rum.

The dark rum, a recipe that dates back to his family's rum trade in the 17th century, will be produced, bottled and distributed by Jamaica's leading rum producer Wray & Nephew.

This new premium rum will be launched on June 9 at the Terra Nova Hotel All-Suite and June 11th at Montego Bay's Half Moon Hotel respectively.

Blackwell's Black Gold Rum, while looking to establish itself in the local market, has an eye on the lucrative export market, more particularly the UK and the US.

Blackwell's Black Gold Rum spokesperson, Kevin Burke, speaking with Caribbean Business Report last night, said: " With the vision of Chris Blackwell, this rum or Black Gold, is certainly a Jamaican treasure, we are very proud to launch and firmly plant our roots in Jamaica. The unique and authentic packaging, and most importantly the high quality of the rum, give us something very special to share with consumers in Jamaica and soon globally. Yes we are definitely looking to export to key markets and we already have some interest from some large upper end chain establishments.''

Blackwell's partner in this new rum venture is none other than advertising guru Richard Kirshenbaum of the New York advertising agency Kirshenbaum Bond& Partners. Kirshenbaum has help to create brands such as Kenneth Cole, Coach and Snapple. He has also helped to reinvigorate Target, Jergens and Moet & Chandon.

Blackwell's Black Gold, Fine Jamaican Rum retails at J$2,379 per bottle, and in bond at US$33 per bottle.

Commenting on his new premium rum, Blackwell said: "Blackwell deep, rich and fragrant character enhances all traditional rum drinks, providing taste experiences that are truly special and immensely satisfying. Just as Blackwell adds a new dimension to cola, the most popular way of enjoying rum, daiquiris and punches made with Blackwell deliver nuances of flavour that are simply unique. Discover for yourself the taste treasures that await by mixing Blackwell with your favourite rum concoctions."
