Jamaica's first national hero and black nationalist, Marcus Garvey, will be remembered in a tribute in Harlem, New York next month by Urban Renaissance, Inc. as they hold their fifth memorial tribute on June 10th at the historic Marcus Garvey Park in East Harlem. The Marcus Garvey Memorial Tribute was established when Moses Henriques, Director of Urban Renaissance, Inc. and his associates, Neville Henry, Bryon Moore, and Miguel Lorne saw a need to rekindle the memory of this significant historical figure. All are ardent supporters of the teachings of Marcus Garvey and decided that such a man deserved an annual memorial. Last year's event featured speakers such as Redman Battle, President of the General UNIA-ACL; Dr. Tony Martin, Marcus Garvey historian and author; Byron Moore, former Commissioner of the UNIA-ACL for the Caribbean & Latin America and Father Powers President of the African Nationalist Pioneer Movement. Their passion for the event’s honouree fueled thoughtful discussion about politics and progress. This year, the keynote speaker will be Miguel Lorne, president of the Marcus Garvey People’s Political Party. Dr. Julius Garvey,Marcus Garvey’s son, is also expected to be in attendance.
