ImageWorld champions, Veronica Campbell-Brown and Tyson Gay, underlined their quality with good victories in the 100m at the Adidas Track Classic on Sunday.

Campbell-Brown, the 2004 Olympic gold medallist over 200 meters, won from a strong field that included seven of the world's top 10 from last year, including her arch rival Lauryn Williams.

Keeping her composure after two false starts which resulted in Marshevet Hooker being disqualified, she crossed the finish line in a time of 11.14 seconds ahead of 2005 world champion Lauryn Williams of the U.S. (11.15) and Jamaican Kerron Stewart (11.16).  Allyson Felix, who set the year's fastest time last week at Doha, was fourth in 11.21.

"I was hoping to run faster but a win is a win," a smiling Campbell-Brown told reporters. "I think I have a few little things to work on, especially my start.  In a competition like this, you have to expect anything. I just maintained my focus today and was able to execute.  My whole year is built around Beijing where I'm really looking forward to competing. I have won all the global titles and the only one missing right now is the Olympic 100 metres."

In the 'B' race, Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie of the Bahamas won in 11.18 seconds.

In the men's 100m, Tyson Gay, in his US season debut, edged fellow American Darvis Patton to win in 10.05 seconds.  Running against a wind of -0.3m per second, Gay started well and held off Patton,  who stopped the clock in 10.06. 2007 world runner-up Derrick Atkins of Bahamas was third in 10.16.

Gay returned in the 200m and gave a much more dominating performance as he won in the year's second best time of 20.08 seconds.  Xavier Carter, the third fastest ever over the distance, was second in 20.30.  Omar Brown of Jamaica was seventh in 21.07.

American Muna Lee won the women's 200m in a world leading 22.30 seconds, to edge compatriot Carmelita Jeter by .17 of a second.

Jamaica finished first and third in the women's 400m as Novlene Williams-Mills (50.38) and Shereefa Lloyd (50.93) sandwiched American Mary Wineberg (50.41) in second.

World and Olympic 400m champion Jeremy Wariner, fully recovered after feeling a strain and pulling out in Doha, won his pet event in 44.42 seconds with Canada's Tyler Christopher second in 44.71 and Chris Brown of Bahamas third in 44.94.

"I got out slower than I'm used to," Wariner said.  "I wanted to make sure I didn't pull nothing before trials. My hamstrings felt fine. I missed a few days of training but nothing major.

"My goals (for Beijing) are to defend my title, maybe get the world record."

Bahamas’ Chris Brown ran another trade mark race – finishing very strong at the end -- to clip Trinidadian-born American Kerron Clement at the line for third. Brown ran 44.94 to beat Clement (45.10).

Jamaican Ricardo Chambers went out fast and paid for it, as he ended in fifth with 45.29. Michael Blackwood, also of Jamaica was also left in the pack and finished seventh in 45.78.

In other results, reigning Olympic champion Joanna Hayes won the 100 hurdles in 12.64 seconds, edging fellow American Candice Davis by .07 of a second and American Shannon Rowbury posted the fastest time this year in the women's 1,500 metres, winning by more than three seconds with a time of 4:01.61.

Jenn Stuczynski set an American record in the women's pole vault by clearing 4.90m but failed in three attempts at a world record.

Kenyan-born US runner Bernard Lagat won the 1,500m in 3:35.14 with New Zealand's Nick Willis second in 3:35.75 and Canada's Kevin Sullivan third in 3:35.78.

"I'm pleased with my performance," Lagat said. "That means my training is going well. I want to get into the top three in three events at the trials and get myself in top shape for the Olympics themselves."

Christian Cantwell, a two-time world indoor champion and 2008 world leader, won the shot put at 21.39m.
