There were four Jamaican winners at the annual Grand Prix meeting in Dakar, Senegal, on Saturday, part of the IAAF World Athletics Tour 2008.
Sheri-Ann Brooks, who was aiming to repeat her double win last year, failed in her bid but managed to represent Jamaica on the podium. She placed second in the 100m in a time of 10.27 seconds behind Oludamola Osayomi of Nigeria who won the event in a personal best 11.10. Gloria Kemasuode of Nigeria was third in 11.48. Brooks returned in the half lap event where she turned the tables on Osayomi, winning in a time of 23.01 seconds. Kadiatou Camara (23.07) of Mali closed fast for second and Osayomi finished third in 23.30.
“This time I had a better start than I did in the 100m. I am just glad that my times are decent and should get me into some big races in the European circuit,” Brooks revealed.
Clement Campbell, following up on his break through season last year where he ran 10.02 for the 100m and 20.29 for the 200m, competed in both events at the meet. He won the 100m in 10.24, ahead of Obinna Metu (10.33) of Nigeria.
“For us Jamaicans a chance to come to Africa is a lifelong dream. Our ancestors came from Africa and so to win my race on my first trip to Africa means a lot to me,” Campbell revealed.
He came back in the 200m but could only manage third place as Tyree Washington of the US won the event in 20.78 seconds ahead of Metu (20.82). Campbell's time was 20.91.
Shot Putter, Dorian Scott, also on his first trip to Africa, continued his great form this season by heaving the ball some 20.52m. The Ukraine’s Yuriy Bilonog (20.24) was runner up ahead of Slovakia’s Milan Haborak (20.14).
“The atmosphere on Goree Island was great. It is so encouraging to see young children so passionate about athletics. They cheer every competitor. I certainly wish to come back next year,” Scott said after his win.
Isa Phillips (49.70) 400m Hurdles victory was Jamaica's fourth of the day. He finished ahead of Mamadou Kasse Hane (50.99) of Senegal and LaBronze Garrett (51.13) of the USA.
“We come from a long tradition of quality hurdlers. My manager and trainer Graham Winthrop was the best Jamaica has ever produced. He is encouraging me to train and possibly surpass the mark he achieved. If all goes well I hope I will be one of the Jamaicans who run under 48 seconds this year,” said Phillips.
