Just over nine months have elapsed since the Bruce Golding led JLP administration has been in power and the Jamaican Prime Minister, Bruce Golding, has already announced changes to his cabinet. The most notable change has been made to the Ministry of National Security in what seems to be a repsonse to the rising crime levels across the country. Golding yesterday announced that Colonel Trevor MacMillan will be sworn in to the post today. MacMillian, a former Commissioner of Police between 1993 and 1996, will replace Derrick Smith in the position. Macmillan will be named a senator to serve in the post, replacing Senator Ian Murray who reportedly resigned according to a government statement released yesterday. The Ministry of Mining and Energy is also experiencing changes. Golding is restructuring the ministry and giving Smith the portfolio of Minister of Mining and Telecommunications while Clive Mullings, who held the responsibility for all three portfolios, will now serve only as the new minister of energy. Smith, who is recovering from a recent surgery, is set to begin his new duties after he has recovers. In the interim, Mullings will continue to oversee the portfolio of Mining and Telecommunications, a government statement said yesterday. Smith will also be resuming his substantive responsibilities as Leader of the House and as the Minister responsible for Electoral Matters, the prime minister added.
