ImageThe Seville Heritage Great House was the scene of the Taino Day celebration, which was held on May 5th.  Hundreds of students from schools islandwide descended on the historical site to witness the performances and exhibitions of their fellow schoolmates.

Talented singers from Marcus Garvey High School performed in front of enthusiastic supporters as the Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) moved to increase public awareness of the indigenous Taínos and their contribution to the island's heritage.

There were debates between the schools and cultural performances included some well choreographed conga drum ensembles and a Taino dance, complete with bows and arrows and outfits.

Taino Village
There was a village set up to mimic the way the indigenous people lived.  Within this village were Taino homes and displays of Taino art, pottery and hunting tools.

Jamaicans, in general, still hold on to the idea that the Arawaks were the original people in Jamaica.  As such, this was a great step by the JNHT to make the public aware of the Tainos and the real history of Jamaica.
