The roadway between the Sangster International Airport and the Iberostar Hotel in Rose Hall, St James will receive a $200 million facelift over the course of the next few months.  Private sector companies in association with theTourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) will provide the financing for the beautification project.

"Massive upgrading is to be done in that area," TEF chairman Godfrey Dyer told the annual general meeting of the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Tuesday. "There will be beautification, installation of street lights and traffic lights. the whole works," Dyer said.

He said on completion, the roughly eight-mile stretch of road will be called the 'Elegant Corridor'.

"I tell you, whenever it is finished it is going to be a beauty, it is going to be an attraction that both locals and visitors can feel proud of when they pass there," said the TEF chairman.

Work on the project is expected to begin within another couple of weeks.

"When the work begins the traffic lights will be installed within four weeks and the landscaping and the street lights should commence in about six weeks," Dyer said.  The project, he added, should be finished by the end of September.

Meanwhile, Dyer said that the TEF has allocated $40 million to the National Works Agency (NWA) to undertake a state-of-the-art traffic management system for the Montego Bay business district.

"This certainly will make a difference to downtown Montego Bay, which has been grappling with a traffic problem," Dyer said.

That project, he said, should begin within another two months.
