RuralZed is one company that’s aiming to reduce the human need for fossil fuels via the production of their timber-frame kit house which can make you self sufficient and negates the necessity of the power grid. The house's energy-conserving features include a solar-thermal water heating system, south-facing windowed walls, natural ventilation that exploits air pressure differentials, heat-absorbent cement or masonry walls and floors, and an airtight polymer membrane that seals seams and joints. Thanks to the savings realized, the energy needs of the house can be met by solar panels mounted on the roof and specially designed wind turbines that rotate around a vertical axis.

Dependence on fossil fuels is the topic of debates the world over as oil prices continue to rise. Alternative means of fuel are being investigated and developed in an effort to reduce this dependency, which, according to some estimates, sees oil falling below the level required to meet international demand somewhere between 2010 and 2020.
