The 103rd Millrose Games, held yesterday (Jan. 29)  at Madison Square Gardens, New York, kicked off the 2010 season for a number of Jamaican athletes.  The Jamaicans put in creditable perfomances with one athlete winning her event.

Sheree Francis, competing in the high jump, cleared 1.88 meters to defeat Raevan Harris (1.85) and Pricilla Fredrick (1.75) of the United States and take the gold medal.

Veronica Campbell-Brown’s return to indoor competition ended in defeat as she was beaten into second place in the women’s 60m dash.

Campbell-Brown, who won 200m silver at last year's World Championships, finished second to American Lisa Barber in a very tight finish which saw both runners being credited with the same time of 7.24 seconds.  That time also broke the meet record. American Olympian Muna Lee finished third in 7.25 seconds, with Bianca Knight taking fourth in 7.32.

The men’s race went to Ivory Williams in 6.59 seconds. Michael Rodgers was second in 6.60, while Antigua’s Daniel Bailey (6.63) was fourth after a poor start.  Jamaica's Steve Mullings ended sixth in 6.67.

Also finishing sixth was Nickiesha Wilson as Priscilla Lopes-Schliep, the World Championship 100m hurdles silver medalliest, continued her good form at the meeting. The Canadian clocked 8.01 seconds to beat Americans Tiffany Ofili (8.04) and Virginia Powell (8.07) in the women’s 60m hurdles.  Wilson finished with a time of 8.19 seconds.

The 600 yard event saw Edino Steele finishing second in 1:11.30 seconds behind American Bershawn Jackson in 1:11.26.  Renny Quow of Trinidad & Tobago, was third in 1:11.60.
