In Jamaica, there is a superstitious belief that if an asthmatic stands beside a tree and the tree is then chopped at the persons height, the asthma will be stopped dead in its tracks and not bother the sufferer anymore.
They might have been on the right track as researchers have pointed to the effect trees have on the prevalence of asthma. Living on a tree-lined street reduces a child's risk of developing asthma compared with life in a grey inner-city neighbourhood, say researchers.

It is often said that what the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve and mankind has certainly conceived of many things that have been highlighted, especially in Hollywood. From the silver screens, biotechnology has developed a bionic arm that allows amputees to control movements of their prosthetic limbs with their thoughts and a training system called BrainPort is allowing people with visual and balance disorders to bypass their damaged sensory organs and instead transmit information to their brain through the tongue. Well, scientists have now also developed a 'bionic eye' that may hold the key to returning sight to people left blind by hereditary disease, namely, retinitis pigmentosa.
The artificial eye, called the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System, was developed by US firm, Second Sight and a team of doctors at London's Moorfields Eye Hospital have used the technology to treat patients in the UK as part of a clinical study into the therapy. It said the technology may be able to restore a basic level of vision by allowing patients to see large objects, but experts have said the research is still in its infancy.

Forget antibiotics, give me some viruses |

In an age where "superbugs" are getting more resistant to antibiotics, spreading rapidly across the globe and infecting millions of people each year, scientists have been searching for new ways to battle these bacteria that are quick to evolve defences against our most potent treatments. Well, scientists from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland have come up with an alternative to antibiotics, which may successfully stop bacteria in its tracks. Janice Spencer and a team of researchers are developing nylon sutures (type of binding or stitch) coated with bacteriophages. A bacteriophage is a virus, found abundantly in seawater, that infects bacteria and is commonly referred to by its abbreviated name, phage. Phages are believed to be the most widely distributed and diverse entities in the biosphere. They have been used for over six decades as an alternative to antibiotics in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Phages work by binding to the bacteria and injecting its DNA. They replicate in their host until it reaches capacity and bursts, killing the bacteria in the process.

I came across an article in the Jamaica Gleaner called "Jamaican-born pharmacist has cure for AIDS?". Is this just another hoax or is this the real deal? Early last year, Gambian President Yahya Jammeh also claimed that he had the cure for AIDS and several people there claimed they had been cured. None of that was ever proven. Vernon Palmer, however, says his cure has been administered to over 200 patients in a letter he wrote to www.futuredirections.org in March 2007. He said that "AMBUSH works by "KILLING” the virus. Firstly by elevating the temperature of the trunk area, especially at nights when the patients are laying down. This is because of the radioactive property of the isotope. Secondly, the amino side group attaches to the protein coating of the virus causing it to rupture. Thirdly, since the uranium molecule is ‘large and heavy’, it is not metabolized by the body but is excreted virtually unchanged. In industrial productions of AMBUSH, the amino group will be exchanged for phentolamine. "

There is a great variety of mind-blowing long-suppressed facts about Humanity's best friend "The Cannabis Plant". Hemp or Cannabis as it is scientifically referred to is the fastest growing biomass source on Earth. Biomass is a cheap and efficient source of fuel. As a matter of fact, if we were to farm only 6% of the country's available farmland with hemp we could meet all of the country's Industrial energy and transportation needs.
Hemp is 26 times stronger than cotton and lasts 10 times longer. We can produce 4 times as much paper from Hemp as we can from trees at one fourth the cost and 1/5 the pollution and it is 10 times stronger and lasts ten times longer. It is a fact that Betsy Ross made our first flag "Old Glory" from Hemp fiber. Also, the American Constitution and Declaration of Independance were printed on Hemp paper. The soldiers clothes during the revolutionary war were made from Hemp. The second most prescribed medicine in the United States for 150 years for over 100 different medical illnesses was a Cannabis extract and it is alot stronger when taken in concentrated form.
