Eighty-one residents of Farm and surrounding communities in South Manchester on Friday (December 4) benefitted from a health fair and outreach programme organised by Jamalco.

The bauxite/alumina company, which has mining operations in the area, partnered with the Child Development Agency (CDA), the National Council on Drug Abuse, and the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) to provide health checks and information to the residents who accessed the services at the Farm Community Centre.

The Hope Dialysis Centre, which will provide medical treatment to persons affected by kidney disease, was officially opened yesterday (Sept. 10) by Minister of Health, Hon. Rudyard Spencer.

A state-of-the-art private facility, which is located at 17 Latham Avenue in Kingston, the dialysis centre will boost the capabilities of the island in providing high quality self-management skills training for persons affected by the disease, while improving their quality of health.

Member of Parliament for North West St. Ann, Othneil Lawrence, says that lands have been identified at Mount Edgecombe, Runaway Bay, for the construction of a new health care facility expected to cost some $15 million.

"We intend to make this project a reality through the allocation of funds from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), the North East Regional Health Authority (NERHA), as well as from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the private sector," Mr. Lawrence assured.

Chief Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Sheila Campbell-Forrester, has said that the Ministry is placing increased focus on pre-adolescent and adolescent health, to ensure that the country's youth are healthy and are able to achieve their full potential.
