After months of speculation, Google made its debut as a cell phone software provider Tuesday at a special event in New York, New York.  The phone, called the G1, will be sold by wireless carrier T-Mobile for a very competitive price of $179 with a two-year contract.

It is the first phone to run Google's Android OS and looks a bit like Apple Inc.'s iPhone with its large 3.17" touch screen (480x320 HVGA resolution).   However,  it also packs a trackball, a slide-out keyboard and easy access to Google's e-mail and mapping programs.
