Situated in the heart of the hurricane zone, the Caribbean region is no stranger to natural disaster. In 2004, Jamaica found itself in Hurricane Ivan’s destructive path. Jamaica’s farmers, who make up 20 percent of the workforce, were among the hardest hit. Many of them, especially those in the south, lost all their crops when the hurricane hit. Farm equipment and buildings were also lost or heavily damaged. Unable to recover, most farmers suffered major losses.

New developments in prosthetic hands |

It's amazing how fast technology advances. Last summer, the Scottish company Touch Bionics, released the i-LIMB hand - the first prosthetic hand that enabled the movement of individual fingers by using five small, battery-powered motors that are embedded in each finger.
Well, this summer sees the release of a new prosthetic hand, the Fluidhand. According to its developers, the Fluidhand is lighter, behaves more naturally, and has greater flexibility than artificial hands that use motorized fingers.

Payola is a topic where, in Jamaica, there is much discussion but very little action. It is a criminal offence that is embedded in the Jamaican radio industry where airplay is 'bought' by producers, artistes and record companies.
According to some, this practice has diminished the quality of songs played on the radio and, in the process, has frustrated many artists and producers to leave the business. However, in this technological era, the inability to pay to get your songs played shouldn’t be a deterrent as it is now possible to have your own radio station to promote your own songs or songs that you feel deserve promoting.
