John Barnes named new coach of Jamaica |

John Barnes was today named Jamaica's head coach effective November 1, 2008. However, until he assumes his responsibilities, Theodore Whitmore will be in charge of Jamaica's next two matches in the current round of World Cup qualifiers.
The Jamaica Football Federation held an extraordinary meeting of the Board of Directors today and Whitmore, scorer of Jamaica's two goals in their historic win over Japan in World Cup 1998, was given the interim job of coaching Jamaica against Mexico and Honduras.

Shelly-Ann Fraser continued Jamaica's 2008 dominance in the short sprint by winning the 100m on day 2 of the World Athletic Finals in Stuttgart, Germany. Asafa Powell had won the men's event on day 1.
Fraser, the Olympic champion won the event in a time of 10.94 seconds ahead of Beijing silver medalist and compatriot Kerron Stewart, who clocked 11.06 seconds.

Powell leads Jamaican athletes at World Athletic Final |

On a bleak and cold day Saturday evening, Asafa Powell continued his streak of impressive times by retaining his 100 metres title in the IAAF World Athletics Final in Stuttgart, Germany. The win marks the fourth consecutive year Powell has won the event.
The former world record holder defied the weather once again and ran a quick 9.87 to finish ahead of Jamaican compatriots Nesta Carter and Michael Frater. Carter clocked 10.07 while Frater was a step back in 10.10.

Will the Reggae Boyz miss the trip to Africa in 2010 now that they are at the bottom of their qualifying round after three matches and only one point?
According to Captain Horace Burrell, president of the Jamaica Football Federation, it is very likely that Jamaica can still qualify for the World Cup finals.
"I still think that we have a great chance of qualifying and therefore we are going to put all the necessary steps in place to have a replacement within a week," he declared.

Jamaica lose 2-0 to Honduras |

The Reggae Boyz failed in their bid to secure a point from Honduras in their CONCACAF qualifying match in San Pedro Sula on Wednesday.
Jamaica lost 0-2 and remain in the cellar position of the group as Honduras maintained their second-placed spot in Group 2.
