Bolt wins athlete of the year award |

Jamaica's Usain Bolt was, on Sunday, named male World Athlete of the Year at the World Athletics Gala. He beat out Etheopia's Kenenisa Bekele and Cuba's Dayron Robles for the coveted award. Bolt's performance at the Beijing Olympics, where he captured three sprint gold medals, catapulted him to an iconic status as he became the first man to do so since Carl Lewis in 1984 and the first to break three world records at any one meet. He captured the 100m (9.69), 200m (19.30) and ran the third leg for Jamaica's 4x100m team (37.10).

Apart from needing the win, the Reggae Boyz were depending on a Mexican victory over Honduras in San Pedro Sula to guarantee their progression. However, Honduras came away 1-0 winners in that game leaving Jamaica with the almost impossible task of scoring six goals against Canada.
But it might have been. The first scoring chance in the game went to Ricardo Fuller who climbed high in the box to get a powerful header on target. The Canadian keeper was up to the task and came up with the good save.

Jamaica will face its third do-or-die match in as many games tomorrow night in Kingston when they go up against Canada in its final match of the semi-final stage of the 2010 World Cup qualifiers. The Reggae Boyz came bank from the brink of elimination when they had consecutive 1-0 victories at the "Office" over Honduras and Mexico and now have the distinct possibility of getting through to the next round.

West Indies swept |

Despite another century from captain Chris Gayle, the West Indies lost game three by 31 runs and in the process suffered a whitewash at the hands of Pakistan. Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat. Their innings of 273-6 was anchored around a solid 101 by Younis Khan and an unbeaten 79 by Misbah-ul-Haq.

West Indies lose series |

Pakistan beat the West Indies today by 24 runs in the second one-day international, and in the process, won the three-match series.
Batting first after winning the toss, Pakistan were all out for 232 in 49 overs. This was due mainly to the West Indies bowling attack which, for the most part, was of the correct line and length.
