Jamaica to spend US$11 million to clean up resort areas PDF Print E-mail

Jamaica, through a cooperation between The Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) and the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), will be spending approximately US$11 million over one year to beautify resort areas in six parishes as part of phase two of the 'Spruce up Jamaica' programme.

The two agencies signed the agreement on November 5 which will ensure the initial cleaning of areas in St. James, Westmoreland, Trelawny, St. Ann, Portland and Kingston.

The 'SuperKids Empowerment Project', which is being staged by non-profit group Great Shape! Inc, was officially launched at the Parry Town Primary School in Ocho Rios in St. Ann on Thursday (Nov. 6).

Tropical storm Paloma has strengthened to a category 1 hurricane with winds nearing 75 mph.  The 16th named Atlantic storm of the 2008 season is on course to hit the Cayman Islands and Cuba.

Forecasters say the storm is expected to continue gaining strength as it moves in a northerly direction over the coming hours.  A hurricane warning is in effect for the Cayman Islands as at 7 p.m. EST, Paloma was located about 165 miles south of Grand Cayman and moving north near 12 mph.  A gradual turn to the northeast is expected late Friday.

CDB To Provide Financial Support for Poverty Reduction in Jamaica PDF Print E-mail

Over 150,000 persons in about 130 poor communities in Jamaica are expected to benefit from a project to be financed by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), and the learning environment for more than 9,000 children in pre-primary and primary schools will be enhanced.   

The Bank will provide a loan equivalent to USD12.085 million to the Government of Jamaica to support the Government in its continuing commitment to raise the living standards of the poor and vulnerable in that country.
