A hurricane warning is in effect for Jamaica and for all the Cayman Islands while a tropical storm warning is in effect for the Cuban Province of Granma.
Interests in central and western Cuba should closely monitor the progress of Gustav.

Hurricane Gustav slammed into flood-prone Haiti on Tuesday, killing at least two people. The storm is also threatening the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Cayman Islands and Jamaica. The National Societies of Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cuba and Jamaica as well as the Overseas Branch of the British Red Cross in the Cayman Islands have been in close contact with the International Federation. The Pan American Disaster Response Unit (PADRU) in Panama has deployed one disaster management delegate to Haiti to support early relief activities as well as one delegate to Jamaica for pre-positioning. Two disaster management delegates are on stand-by for deployment to Cuba in order to support relief activities in the event Gustav hits the island.

Sherone Simpson, Shelly-Ann Fraser and Kerron Stewart will each try to replicate Usian Bolt and become the first Jamaican to win the women’s 100m event at the Olympics. Last night, Bolt demolished the world record as he stormed to victory by two-tenths of a second.

Jamaica’s three entrants in the men’s 100 meters all advanced to the semi-finals today along with five other men from the Caribbean.
World-record holder, Usain Bolt, looked the most impressive with his time of 9.92 seconds. The 6’ 5” phenomenon ran the fastest ever 100m on Chinese soil even after he slowed to a jog midway the race. He had time to be glancing from side to side, almost mockingly, as he tried to ascertain whether his position was secure.

The highlight event at the Beijing Olympics, the men's 100m race, got underway on Thursday night with the running of the heats. Asafa Powell, one of the main contenders for gold seemed to have suffered an injury after winning his heat in 10.15 seconds.
Powell got his expected fast start and eased up at 70 meters to cruise in for the win but was seen being treated at trackside afterwards when he complained of a stomach muscle problem. However, he seemed fine departing the track with his MVP teammates after the last heat was run.
