Lasco Manufacturing Limited officially broke ground on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, to initiate the construction of a new state-of-the-art factory, located in White Marl, St. Catherine, off the Mandela Highway.
The development of the new factory is estimated to cost approximately US$24M or J$2.1B and will feature a modern and highly efficient processing plant. Dr. Eileen Chin, Managing Director of LASCO Manufacturing, explained, “Our focus is on newly improved & energy efficient equipment both in the factory and the well equipped manufacturing laboratory. These advancements will allow LASCO to improve on its already enviable reputation of producing high quality affordable goods for consumers.”
Through the development of the new factory, LASCO aspires to provide approximately 250 jobs and by extension further establish its contribution to Jamaica’s economic development.
Chairman and CEO of the company, the Hon. Lascelles Chin during his address said that, “The factory will boast top class efficiency, giving LASCO the ability to increase outputs while reducing imports. This will allow more of our locally made products to enter the market.” He also took the opportunity to speak on the projected time-line for the completion of the facility. “We intend to complete work on the facility by April of this year,” he revealed.
Guest speaker at the ceremony, Prime Minister, The Most Hon. Portia Simpson-Miller congratulated LASCO on its successes, stating that, “LASCO deserves acclamation for continuing to invest in the future of Jamaica and its economy. LASCO has gone above and beyond to ensure efficiency in their manufacturing.” She added that the projected creation of approximately 250 jobs for Jamaicans mirrors the vision of her Government.
“This is the type of news I want to hear. If I get called to attend the ground-breaking ceremony for a factory every day, it would certainly mean we are moving in the right direction.” This was the sentiment expressed by the Hon. Anthony Hylton, Minister of Industry, Investment & Commerce, under whose ministry the manufacturing sector is governed. He lauded LASCO for its continued efforts to provide high quality service, adding that the company is a great example for locally owned and operated companies.
